As we had last mentioned that the swimming pool structure cost varies as we move across different countries, depending on the cost of labor in those particular countries, here we would discuss various construction procedures followed across different countries to keep the construction cost conducive as per the available resources.

1] In most of the southeast Asian countries or the countries where the labor is cheap, preferentially pools are made by traditional cement reinforced concrete, with waterproofing by cementitious or elastomeric quoting, also injection grouting is done in structure to fill any honeycombs or voids. Finishing of the pool is done by tiling which again gives a waterproof cover, and the cost of such structures comes between 200 to 300 USD per SQMT.
At places even glinting or shot-creating is done for waterproofing where cost is not the constraint.

2] In places like Europe, the US, and the Middle East where labor is expensive stainless steel panels are used for pool walls which are bolted at the bottom on the reinforced cement concrete base and at the sides by one panel to another. Rubber sheets are used at the joints between panel to panel, and panel to bottom to provide waterproofing. These panels are factory built and come ready to fix at the site

These pools are usually quicker to built and have relatively easier maintenance for the structural faults and cost around USD 500/SQMT. This technology is vastly becoming popular in the rest of the world as well due to its post-construction structural maintenance.

So here we have discussed two of the most widely used construction practices prevalent across the world for the construction of swimming pool shells, and the final finish and waterproofing practices deployed in each. Swimming pool construction cost in India is something that a lot of people are keen to know about but before that, we need to know about the different categories of swimming pools and try to figure out the category that we are looking forward to, and with every category, there come a few subcategories.

So to keep things simple I will first throw light on all the different categories of the pool, which are as follows
  • Pools for sporting events – These are the pools which are used for sporting events like racing and diving and are usually of three types ie Olympic size pool, Semi Olympic size pool, and Diving pool and are usually seen at places like a stadium, educational institutions, privately owned clubs and occasionally even at community dwellings. And their cost which is usually the same for a specific type may still vary considerably due to special features one may choose to opt for.

 

  • Pools for community use =   These are the pools that are seen at places like group housing societies, hotels, resorts, clubs, schools, hospitals, fitness centers, and they do not come with any shape or size restriction. They can be free form pool, lap pool, circular pool, infinity pool, reverse infinity pool, hydrotherapy pool, or just a Jacuzzi. The shapes and size of these pools are usually determined basis requirement type and the way we want them to blend with the property they are built-in, and their cost varies considerably with the requirement type.

 

  •  Pools for private property –  These pools are built at places like private villas, penthouses, celebrity bungalows, and farmhouses, and are usually owned and used by a single owner and are tailor-made to suit the needs of its owner which might range from exercising for fitness, hydrotherapy for senior citizen in family, enhancing the aesthetics of a property or just to blend naturally with the entire architecture of the property.

These are the pools that may have very high variance in cost for the same shape and size owing to the various features like heating and fountains and jets attached to the pool, and final finishing given to the pool.

Before coming on to costing, I will like to give you some general information on Olympic size pools, Olympic pool dimensions are 50 m by 25m with avg depth of 2m, and the total volume of water that it has is around 2.5million liters or 2500 cubic meter.

  • Cost of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work which includes the work of installation of a filtration plant to keep the pool water clean, ladders, inlets and drains to get water in and out of the pool, plumbing within the pool to keep water always recirculating, electrical work for underwater lights within the pool, pump, dozers, UV and panel installation in the plant room.
  • Cost of competition equipment like starting blocks – that swimmers jump from, lane dividers, backstroke indicators, touchpads, and various other accessories which may vary with the level of sophisticacy you want to give to the pool.
  • Any optional features that you may want to give to the pool like, temperature control, movable pool floor, air nozzles at the bottom of the pool floor.
While the first three dimensions are a mandatory requirement for any Olympic size pool the fourth is optional and is usually considered for state-of-the-art pools that hold high-level tournaments.
The three dimensions which hold common for all the Olympic pools can again be segregated into country type, where there are countries with cheap labour like Asian ,African and South American countries and the other with expensive labour like Europe USA, and Australia, so here we would see how all these different places have different practices prevalent to optimise their cost.
