Most pools receive one light on a wall and the subject is considered closed. A properly lit pool uses up to four different kinds of light, each doing a different job — illuminating the water, tracing the geometry, marking the steps, and, where it is justified, creating an effect no other fitting can. This page sets out all four, honestly, and which category of pool each one belongs in.
Lighting a pool is the same discipline as lighting a room. A living room lit by one ceiling bulb is functional; the same room with layered light — general, task, accent — is where people actually want to sit. Water responds to layered light even more strongly than a room does, because water carries light, bends it, and moves under it.
The four layers below are not four grades of the same product. They are four different technologies, installed at different stages, doing four different jobs. A pool may need one of them or all four — but the decision should be made layer by layer, not by picking a fitting from a catalogue.
Illuminate the water body itself. The layer every pool must have.
Trace the geometry — the floor plane, the perimeter, the step edges.
Small side lights beside steps and benches, so level changes read at night.
The effect layer — a night sky in the pool floor, with nothing electrical in the water.
These are the wall-mounted LED lights that make the water body itself glow — the layer that lets people swim at night and lets the pool be seen from the house. They are recessed into niches or surface-mounted flat on the walls, always low-voltage (12V), fed through an isolating transformer in the plant room.
Getting this layer right is mostly about placement, not wattage. Lights are mounted on the wall facing away from the main viewing direction — the house, the deck seating, the restaurant terrace — so the glow is seen in the water, not the fixture in the eye. Wide-angle lenses at a lower mounting height give an even wash; a small pool over-lit with narrow beams shows hot spots and dark corners at the same time.
Modern pool LEDs are rated for tens of thousands of hours and are available in warm white, cool white, or full colour-changing (RGB) versions controllable from the plant room or a phone. On a well-built installation, this is the least troublesome fitting in the pool — the failures that give pool lights their reputation come from mains-voltage halogen fittings and poor cable glanding, not from a correctly installed 12V LED.
Colour-changing lights are enjoyable, but a pool that only looks right in blue is a pool whose water is being flattered. We specify the white setting as the reference: if the water does not look inviting in plain white light, the problem is filtration, not lighting — and no colour wheel should be asked to hide it.
Where a main light illuminates a volume of water, a strip draws a line. Continuous submersible LED strips are run in recessed channels to trace the shapes that make a pool legible at night: the perimeter under the coping, the outline of the floor plane, the leading edge of each step, the face of a swim-out bench, the underside of an infinity edge.
This is the layer that shows off design. A rectangle traced in light reads as architecture; steps outlined in light read as sculpture — and, usefully, as clearly visible steps. On pools with a raised wall, a tanning ledge, or any change of level, strip lighting is what makes those transitions visible after dark instead of being discovered by foot.
The honest caveat: strip quality varies more than any other fitting in this reference. The market is full of decorative strips resealed as “waterproof” that fail within a season underwater. What survives is a genuinely submersible-rated (IP68) strip, run in a proper channel with a diffuser, on 12V or 24V — and installed so that a failed section can be pulled and replaced without breaking tile. A strip that cannot be serviced should not go in the water.
Specify serviceability, not just the strip. The channel, the diffuser, the joint sealing, and the ability to draw a replacement length through — that is the specification. The strip itself is the cheapest line on it.
The smallest fittings in the pool, and the ones most directly connected to safety. These are compact recessed lights — typically 40–80 mm across — set into the side walls adjoining the entry steps, so that each tread is washed with light from the side and the way into the pool is unmistakable at night.
Side-mounting matters. A light placed in the wall beside a step lights the tread and the riser without glare; the swimmer entering the pool sees where each foot goes. The same fittings mark benches, ledges, and the shallow-to-deep transition in a free-form pool.
On a private pool this layer is a refinement. On a community or hospitality pool — where the people entering the water at 9 pm did not build it and do not know its geometry — it is the difference between steps that are used confidently and steps that are stumbled on. We treat step marking as standard on every pool the public uses.
How a star floor reads at night — each point of light is the polished tip of a single light-carrying fibre, flush with the pool finish.
A fibre optic star floor is the one lighting system in this reference with no bulb, no LED, and no electricity anywhere in the water. A single light engine sits in a dry, ventilated box on the deck. From it, bundles of hair-thin optical fibres run through conduits cast into the pool floor. Each fibre carries light — only light — from the engine to a small fitting finished flush with the floor. Every fitting is one star; fittings carrying more fibres shine brighter, which is what makes the sky look natural rather than printed. The twinkling is created inside the deck box, not in the pool.
This is a construction-stage decision, not an accessory. The star map is designed on the floor plan; conduits and fittings are cast into the structure; the fibre harness is pulled and glued before the finish goes on; and the finish is then laid and polished around the fittings. Retrofitting a star floor into a finished pool means breaking the floor — which is to say, it is not done. We also pull spare fibres in every conduit at installation, so a fibre damaged years later during resurfacing can be replaced by drawing a spare, not by breaking concrete.
Remarkably little, if it is built as above. The fibres in the floor are inert acrylic — unaffected by chlorinated water, carrying no current and no heat — and last as long as the finish they sit in. Everything that can wear out sits in the deck box: the LED engine, its driver, its cooling fan. When the system eventually needs attention, the pool is not drained and the floor is not touched — the box on the deck is opened. That is the whole repair.
A star floor is an effect, not illumination — the points of light are deliberately faint, and the pool still needs its main lights. It performs best over a dark finish, where the contrast makes the stars read, and in the places people sit still in shallow water at night: tanning ledges, spa benches, villa plunge pools, children’s pools. On a white-plaster lap pool it is money spent on an effect the finish will wash out.

Hundreds of residents who did not build the pool will use it at night. Even, glare-free general lighting and clearly marked steps come first; effects come last. Where the budget allows one accent, a strip under the infinity edge or along a feature wall gives the project its photograph.
The one category where all four layers are genuinely on the table, because the pool is used at night, seen from the house, and personal. A dark-finish plunge pool or ledge with a star floor is the single most remembered feature we build — but it must be decided before the first conduit is cast.
The pool is photographed more than it is swum, and the evening is the revenue hour. Full layering is standard; star floors belong in the zones where guests linger — spa benches, swim-up lounges, private villa pools — where they become the detail guests post and remember.
Lighting here is a performance specification, not a mood: uniform white illumination, no colour, no effects, nothing that reflects or distracts on the water surface. The discipline is in evenness and glare control, and that is where the entire budget goes.
Whatever the layer, the electrical rule does not change: every fitting in or around the water runs at 12V or 24V through an isolating transformer, every lighting circuit is protected by an RCD, and mains voltage stops at the plant room door. A fibre optic system goes one step further — nothing electrical enters the water at all — which is precisely why it is the layer we place under the seats of children’s pools.

A lighting specification is read the same way as any other specification on this site: by what it decides early. Niches, conduits, channels and star fittings are all cast into the structure. The pool that ends up beautifully lit is not the one that bought the best fittings — it is the one whose lighting was designed before the concrete was poured.
